Getting started
Download and install
Get DermWizard from the App Store or Google Play. Built for doctors and GPs — no email account is required. Install and go.
First launch
After the splash screen you will see a one-time clinical disclaimer covering:
- Not a diagnostic device — decision support only
- Clinician responsibility for judgment and referrals
- Data privacy (no patient identifiers in AI modes)
- When to use urgent / 2WW pathways
Tap Continue to Homepage to enter the app.
Main navigation
Five bottom tabs: Home (clinical hub), Learn (Learning Hub), Diagnose (modes and history), Atlas, and Settings.
Home is your clinical hub — diagnose shortcuts, continue learning, featured picks, and recent cases. Replay guided tutorials anytime via Settings → Replay Tutorials — covers body map, symptom picker, results, and each diagnostic mode.
Learning Hub
Open the Learn tab. Five inner tabs: Discover, Quizzes, Articles, Videos, and Podcasts. Home also shows Continue learning and a featured pick so you can resume an article, quiz, video, or podcast.
Discover
Three sub-tabs for bite-size teaching:
- Pearl — short clinical tips
- Condition — condition of the week style overviews
- Image — clinical images for pattern recognition
Quizzes
The lobby shows Quizzes done, Avg score, and your Day streak. Filter by category or browse all. Tap START — each question asks WHAT IS THE MOST LIKELY DIAGNOSIS? with instant feedback. At the end, review RESULTS and QUESTION BREAKDOWN, then Retry if you like.
Articles, videos & podcasts
Read teaching articles in-app. Watch videos or listen to podcasts (background playback continues if you leave the screen). Selected videos and podcasts are marked Pro and unlock with DermWizard Pro.
Push notifications (optional)
Enable in Settings → Notifications:
- Daily Pearl — morning clinical tip (opens Discover)
- Condition of the Week — Monday highlight
- Weekly Quiz Challenge — Monday lunchtime quiz prompt
Diagnose
Open the Diagnose tab. Inner tabs: Modes and History. Home shortcuts jump here too. The hub shows whether you are Online or Offline and how many cases you have saved.
AI-Assisted Modes (internet required)
- AI Differential — Build top differentials from location, morphology, distribution, and other terminology. Best for complex cases when connected.
- Visual Scan — Combined image analysis with optional clinical input. Opens the photo upload flow directly (not the four-step body-map wizard).
Offline Diagnostics
- Offline Scoring — Rule-based scoring from precise terminology. Works fully offline and privately — ideal for routine checks in poor signal.
Quick links on Home jump to Atlas, Terminology (not a bottom tab — open it from Home shortcuts), Learn, and History. Recent cases appear on Home.
Clinical decision support only — not a substitute for professional judgment. Always apply your own clinical assessment and local referral pathways.
Offline Scoring
Four-step wizard
The consultation flow shows a step indicator: Location → Age → Symptoms → Results.
Step 1 — Body map
Tap the affected area on the interactive body diagram. Optionally refine with sub-location chips (scalp, fingernail, etc.). The diagram can be turned to view different angles.
Step 2 — Patient details
Optional Age and Gender (Male, Female, Other, or Not specified). Skip if not relevant.
Step 3 — Symptom tags
Use the category sidebar (Morphology, Colour, Distribution, Nail Features, etc.) or Search across all features… Long-press any chip to see a reference image. Tap chips to select; use BACK, NEXT, or FINISH when ready. FINISH EARLY appears when confidence is very high.
Step 4 — Results
View ranked conditions with Matching features. Expand any card for details. Actions: DETAILS, PCDS GUIDANCE, VIEW ATLAS. Vote helpful/not helpful or Report missing diagnosis.
AI Differential
Same wizard, AI-ranked results
Follow the same Location → Age → Symptoms flow as Offline Scoring. On first use you will see an AI Data Processing Consent dialog — only anonymous symptom tags are sent; no patient identifiers.
Dual results tabs
On the results screen, switch between:
- Online — AI-ranked differentials with confidence scores, original vs AI score, and a written Rationale
- Offline — rule-based backup using the same tag-matching engine as Offline Scoring
Each result supports DETAILS, PCDS GUIDANCE, VIEW ATLAS, feedback voting, and Report missing diagnosis. Tap New Consultation to start again.
If connection drops during ranking, you will see a retry prompt — the offline tab remains available.
Visual Scan
Image Analysis workflow
From Diagnose → Modes (or a Home shortcut), tap Visual Scan to open Image Analysis. Steps: Upload → Context → Analyze.
Upload clinical image
Capture a new photo or choose from your library. Free tier: one image per scan. Pro: up to three angles per scan for better coverage.
Patient context (optional)
Add gender, quick-select symptom tags, and (Pro) Additional clinical notes to improve accuracy. Tap Start AI Analysis.
Clinical Analysis Report
The structured report includes:
- Primary morphology
- ABCDE clinical assessment (Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolution)
- Differential diagnosis
- Clinical red flags
- Next steps
- View matching atlas images
Then New Scan or Finish. Images are processed securely and not stored unless you save them.
Terminology & Atlas
Terminology (Home shortcut)
Terminology is not a bottom tab. Open it from a Home shortcut. Browse dermatology terms by category — General, Morphology, Patterns & Distribution, Nail signs, Special Signs, and more. Use Search all guide… to find any term mid-consultation. Tap images to zoom. Long-press symptom chips in the wizard to see the same reference images.
Atlas tab
Open the Atlas bottom tab — a searchable grid of curated comparison images. On first visit, read the Medical Atlas Info policy and tap I Understand.
- Toggle Featured for editor picks
- Filter by condition category or body region
- Search conditions, tags, regions…
- Pinch or double-tap to zoom; tap the gavel icon for image licence/attribution
From any differential result, tap VIEW ATLAS to jump here filtered by condition. Condition detail screens also link to atlas images and PCDS Guidance externally.
Condition reference
Opening a condition shows:
- Overview and Key Clinical Features
- Hallmark Features — at least one should be present
- Management Summary — first line, patient advice, red flags
- RED FLAG badges where applicable
Push notifications can open Discover Pearl or Condition directly.
Case history
Open Diagnose → History (or tap recent cases on Home). Filter sub-tabs: All, Offline, AI, or Image.
Auto-save
Toggle Settings → Auto-save Cases to automatically save each consultation when you finish. Empty state: No cases saved yet — complete a consultation to see it here.
Case detail
Opening a saved case shows:
- Primary Morphology and Recommendation
- Differential Diagnosis list
- Clinical Features — location and selected tags
- GP Notes — add your own clinical notes
- Saved scan image (tap to zoom) for Visual Scan cases
Pro & referrals
Free vs Pro
The core toolkit — Learning Hub (Discover, quizzes, articles), Offline Scoring, AI Differential, Atlas, Terminology, Case History, and the Classic colour theme — is free. Visual Scan has tier limits. Selected Learn videos and podcasts, plus extra colour themes, are Pro.
- Free: 1 photo per scan; scheduled scan allowance (typically one every 48 hours); optional rewarded ad (WATCH & SCAN) or rate-the-app bonus for extra scans; ads may appear on Home; Classic theme.
- Pro (one-time purchase): no ads; up to 5 visual scan analyses per calendar day; up to 3 photos per scan; clinical notes field on upload; colour themes (Warm, Tech, Sunrise, Midnight, Sand, Forest); Pro podcasts and videos in Learn.
Upgrade via Settings → Upgrade to Pro. Use Restore purchases after reinstall or device change.
Share with colleagues
Settings → Refer a Colleague — share your code (DW-XXXXXX). When a doctor or GP
redeems it, both of you receive 20 bonus visual scan analyses (up to a bonus pool cap). You can
also redeem someone else’s code with Have a colleague's code? Redeem it here.

PCDS & clinical use
All medical content is derived from the Primary Care Dermatology Society (PCDS) and intended for healthcare professionals in primary care. Atlas images carry source attribution (CDC, NLM, DermNet, etc.).
Always use clinical judgment. DermWizard supports decision-making — it does not replace examination, history, or urgent referral when red flags are present.
